One clue about how a society is going and what direction it's taking is advertising. People and companies spend fortunes in advertising every year, every month, every week. Just a cursory look at what's being advertised will tell you something about the society we are living in and its values. Another indicator is to see what the mainstream media is paying attention to. That is even scarier and more obnoxious to me than the advertising indicators. In a sense, they both tell us what is important to citizens and what the public is buying in terms of both physical items and social and political concerns.
Look at the news. It used to be that the news was really news--something that was going to affect our lives politically and socially. Every time a news story gets "hot" it is sucking the life from stories that are important in less sexy, less "tabloid" issues. The impending collapse of social security and Medicare, the horrendous income tax mess, any real discussion about how to deal with the Middle East--all these are blithely shoved aside by a constant and repulsive explosion of parroting broadcasts about Paris Hilton, Brittany Spears and the death of Anna Nicole Smith. I find this not only repulsive and obnoxious, but, frankly, very scary. More and more important issues are ignored while tabloid issues take front and center. More and more we see the same phrases bandied about by newscasters who cry "tragic" with regard to Anna Nicole Smith and "hot item" with regard to Paris Hilton. And these stories go on for weeks, taking up entire news cycles that ignore more important issues. The frightening thing about this is that evidently people are watching this junk, and this is really scary to me because it means they're not demanding that news broadcasters get back to reporting about matters of some importance. In a sense, the news itself has become one big advertising medium because tabloid issues sell papers and media.
The news has always been in love with negative reporting, but more and more, we see an increase in reportage about high profile sports figures who behave like thugs. It is as if these people are important to our lives and our futures. There has always been a symbiotic relationship between the public and the media. If people would turn off the irrelevant news and stop taking papers who advertise garbage reporting, this would become more balanced, we'd begin to see some interesting and really important subjects begin to appear. If I hear one more time the phrase "global warming" I'll throw up. Neither the media nor politicians have allowed alternate points of view on the issue of climate change to have any voice whatsoever. It's as if all those dissenting with the argument about human causes for climate change are dismissed with a frightening stubbornness that echoes the controlled media of past fascist regimes. Silence any opposition by ignoring it and magnify only one point of view. This was the method used by Hitler and by Mussolini in pre-war Germany and Italy to convince whole populations of one particular point of view, and it's quite frightening and horrendous. I find that any time we see the media broadcasting only one point of view we're in danger of being manipulated for political and social reasons that have nothing to do with the issue at hand.
Now onto advertising. Advertisers are constantly touting Viagra and many drugs that emphasize sexual performance. Sexy women with tight pants who have become more and more "tough" and less and less feminine sell cars. I have really noticed that prime time has become dominated by Viagra ads, ads for drugs to make us sleep, keep us happy, make our kids less disruptive in school. Then there are the ads from loudmouth lawyers who scream that they can retrieve money for us from "damages lawsuits" regarding any number of things. Have a lung disease? Call Lawyer A. Have a kid with Cerebral Palsy or autism? Call Lawyer B. What about a heart condition or death? Call Lawyer C, who can make a case it was caused by anti-depressants or any number of other things. In short, advertising at the most heavily watched prime time is dominated by ads that sell sex, lawsuits and drugs. If that doesn't give anyone pause to wonder what the American public is buying, I don't know what is.
Frankly, these trends are not only obnoxious; they're disturbing and quite frightening. What they show us about ourselves and our willingness to pay attention to these ads and to care about the useless tabloid "reporting" is a reflection of our willingness to accept whatever is thrown our way without question. They are more than just passing trends. They are a reflection of a society that is losing cohesion and decent moral standards. They are, in fact, indicators of the increasing selfishness, self-centered crassness, and indifference to our common unity of purpose and principles.

Comparing Granite and Marble Countertops: Which A single Must You Choose?
However, granite is way tougher than marble and it can be more resistant to scratches and serious impacts in comparison to marble. At the same time, granite is more defiant to acids these kinds of as vinegar, lemon juice, and tomato juice, and also other objects with high levels of acidity. That will help you greater recognize the strengths of the two stones, permit us take a nearer glimpse as to how they were shaped. Marble, and all its stone family - onyx, travertine, and limestone at the onset ended up sediments made of shells, plant matter, animal skeletons, and silt which all settled on the bottom of bodies of water and right after years of getting soaked in water, they solidify and turn out to be stones/ Marble’s primary part is calcium and that's the explanation why it has a tendency to react to acids these kinds of as vinegar as well as other drinks that incorporate citrus. Granite, then again, is built up of crystallized minerals shaped from the earth’s mantle at substantial temperature. The final result can be a challenging, really resistant stone. Marble might be scratched and etched by acids since it is produced of calcium carbonate that's a great deal like chalk nevertheless the only distinction is surface encounters marble is compressed and in the crystallized kind. While in the identical manner, marble has less patterns, in fact it truly is much more typically offered in its white shade so stains and mars may possibly stand out far more uncovered in marble. Granite includes a far more complicated pattern that may hide the stains far better. In terms of types even so, marble contains a finer, far more elegant search than granite. The crystal formations in marble are additional satiny and finer in nature which makes it glimpse a lot more luxurious. Granite has larger, pea-sized crystals which might be coarser to the eye.
Ultimately, in terms of sturdiness, the granite countertop could well be a lot more durable and more resistant to stains and scratches whilst the looks are won by marble. Marble on the other hand is less costly than granite but it requires increased servicing. So, all of it boils right down to that which you actually want as a countertop. Would you settle for your countertop that is certainly incredibly hard-wearing and even though not as quite because the other 1, or would you trade elegance for sturdiness and power?

Making Money Working
From TPM Muckraker, posted before our national celebration of Freedom:
A Luxembourg-based subsidiary of Koch Industries has admitted to making illegal campaign contributions to political candidates and committees. For me, the news (and puzzle) is not that they did it, but that they self-reported it. Note that the action is: (a) pre-Citizens United; (b) inadvertent (because the employees of the foreign company "did not know" they were working for a foreign company); and (c) some Koch internal watchdog entity fessed up.
INVISTA is a limited liability company involved in the textile manufacturing business that is organized in Luxembourg but headquartered in Kansas. They admitted in a filing with the Federal Election Commission that was disclosed this week that they made 12 contributions totally $26,800 to various political committees between Nov. 2005 and Oct. 2009.
INVESTA voluntarily disclosed the violations to the FEC in Aug. 2010 after an investigation by Koch Companies Public Sector (KCPA), which represents Koch Industries and their affiliates, and outside counsel. Their investigation revealed that the employees involved with making the donation decisions did not know INVESTA was a foreign entity and did not know that foreign corporations could not contribute to state elections like corporations could.
The fine is "$4,700 for violating the law" under an "conciliation agreement" plus an agreement get the money returned. The effect is to appear to confirm the foreign donations ban, but I'm wondering why KCPA came forward.
But something's going on that's not being reported. Why did they fess up? Businesses don't usually fess up about anything. They always make the feds prove it, even for minor stuff like perfectly clean sawdust in milk.
Yet on this story, there's nothing but silence on that aspect. For instance, here's the same tale from HuffPost (my emphasis):
INVISTA's contributions were disclosed to the FEC after lawyers for Koch Industries discovered the illegal contributions and relayed the information to the FEC for review. All very voluntary, and no digging for causes.
If I'm managing this strategically from atop the Olympian clouds at Koch Brothers Central, I'd work the response more cleverly into my geo-political grand schemata. After all, I want all election contribution restrictions overturned, don't I. So is this minor event a bit of hyper-clever mis-direction by the Koch Olympians, or a mistake by a corporate underling working in a sub-office of a subsidiary (in this case, the Koch internal watchdog group)?
Could be either, but I suspect that this was handled too quickly and at too low a level for Olympian eyeballs, by relatively honest people who were hired to do non-geo-political wrangling — i.e., keeping the numerous acquired toilet-paper and textile companies in that giant Kochish octopus on the right side of basic and mundane law.
Pushing the Citizens United envelope is not mundane, however. So if I'm right, you may not see that kind of compliant response again. But in any case, expect a challenge to the foreign corp limitation from somewhere. After all, the Chinese would love a piece of the purchase-a-politico game, assuming they don't already have their own set of retainers under contract. It's going to happen.
But for now, kudos to Koch lower-downs for (inadvertently?) doing the right thing. Hope you have a backup plan in case the bosses aren't pleased.

Today, the CMS Office of the Actuary released its report on how much the United States spends on health care now and in the future. The report shows a 3.9 percent growth in health spending in 2010 – an historic low. Overall Medicare cost growth dropped from 7.9 to 4.5 percent between 2009 and 2010. This slow-down occurred at the same time that many seniors with Medicare received cheaper prescription drugs. According to the report, private health spending has and will continue to be low in the next few years. And the report estimates that private benefit spending growth per enrollee will be 3 percent this year, rather than 4.7 percent thanks in part to the Affordable Care Act’s policy that allows young adults to stay on their parent’s plan.
The report concludes that:
Average annual growth in national health spending is expected to be 0.1 percentage point higher (5.8 percent) under current law compared to projected average growth prior to the passage of the Affordable Care Act (5.7 percent) for 2010 through 2020. Simultaneously, by 2020, thirty million Americans are expected to gain health insurance coverage as a result of the Affordable Care Act.
The bottom line from the report is clear: more Americans will get coverage and save money and health expenditure growth will remain virtually the same. But the report doesn’t tell the whole story.
The Affordable Care Act creates changes to the health care system that typically don’t show up on an accounting table. We know these new provisions will save money for the health care system, even if today’s report doesn’t credit these strategies with reducing costs. These provisions include:
The Administration’s Partnership for Patients: Better Care, Lower Costs, a new private-publicpartnership to achieve two goals: reduce preventable hospital-acquired conditions by 40 percent and reduce hospital readmissions by 20 percent between 2010 and 2013. Over 2,000 hospitals as well as employers, physicians, nurses, and patient advocates have committed to these goals which, over the next ten years, could reduce costs to Medicare by about $50 billion and help put our nation on the path toward a more sustainable health care system.
Support for voluntary Accountable Care Organizations that make it easier for health care providers to work together to coordinate care for an individual patient across care settings – including doctor’s offices, hospitals, and long-term care facilities. The Affordable Care Act rewards ACOs that lower health care costs while providing high quality care, and could generate as much as $960 million in Medicare savings over three years.
Bundled payment programs that will reward doctors and hospitals for working together to provide higher quality care to patients rather than bill for each individual procedure or test.
Demonstrations launched by the new Innovation Center that will build and test models that will save money for both Medicare and the private sector, and then expand the use of the models that work.
Important investments in programs that save money over the long-term like prevention and wellness programs.
Americans know that these common-sense strategies will reduce health care costs. Preventing disease and illness before it happens can keep people out of the hospital or the doctor’s office in the first place. Making health care more efficient improves the quality of care and saves money. And investing in new innovations can help generate new ideas and new delivery system reforms that reduce costs. Further, these provisions of the law represent ideas that hospitals, doctors, and employers all over America have been putting into practice for years, where they’ve been able to increase the quality of health care and reduce costs.
We are confident that these reforms – in addition to those in the law – will help make our health care system more efficient, provide better health care to millions of Americans, and bring down health care costs for all of us.

Making Money Now
But Bettany, 29, not only got back on her feet but took advantage of her seven-year recovery to master photography, start a blog, and, two years ago, partner with an international team of six developers to create Camera+, the top-ranked camera app in Apple's iTunes store. The app, which gives iPhone and iPod Touch users the ability to enhance, edit and share photos via Flickr, Facebook, and Twitter, has been downloaded more than 3 million times since it launched in June 2010. The 99-cent app, designed to turn iPhones into high-quality digital cameras, has generated close to $2 million for Bettany and her partners in less than a year. That's after Apple's 30% cut.
As the app's leading web evangelist, Bettany has earned roughly $400,000 so far thanks to the 20% revenue share she negotiated with the app's developers. The former linguistics grad student who once struggled to pay the bills as a freelance journalist and photographer is now literally making money while she sleeps.
"I'm so used to being poor," says Bettany, whose Mom was paying her rent until the royalty checks starting arriving last August. "Now my bank calls me up all the time and asks, 'What's all this money?'"
Bettany's apps-to-riches story is becoming increasingly common. With Apple recently celebrating the 10 billionth download to its iTunes store, creative young software developers are rushing to cash in on the latest digital business trend. With low development costs, a worldwide customer base and instant distribution, the creator of a successful app can hit it big without raising venture capital, hiring a sales force or recruiting a pricey management team.
John Casasanta, co-founder and chief of tap tap tap, the three-year-old company that developed and owns the Camera+ app, says he gives his developers a share of the app's revenues instead of a guaranteed salary in order to lower the costs associated with developing the apps and pump out more apps in less time. This arrangement also allows the company to grow through cash flow, not venture capital.
"We've found this model to be extremely effective for us because it helps everyone involved do their best work," Casasanta says.
Bettany is not your typical geek. A woman, a social networker and the self-described "face of the app," her elfin good looks, whimsical how-to videos and intimate knowledge of apps and iPhones (her father, a professor, introduced her to Apple when she was two) have helped her stand out in a sea of largely anonymous tech bloggers. When her blog, MostlyLisa.com, began to gain traction several years ago, she was invited to be a guest on tech podcasts such as MacBreakWeekly and This Week in Tech. Lisa was the host and producer of the TWiTnetwork's weekly photography show, Mostly Photo, and hosted a popular gadget show in Canada called "Get Connected" which ran on Spike, BNN and CTV.
Bettany's photos, tips and inspirational story have led thousands of followers to join her on Twitter and Facebook. In 2008, Casasanta spotted her Twitter Avatar (a wacky photo of Bettany wearing a Viking helmet) and invited her to join the team of developers that was building Camera+ figuring that her zany sense of humor and in-depth knowledge of photography and the iPhone would help his developers create a more popular app. After a year of 12-hour days and nightly brainstorming sessions with developers all over the world, Camera+ was born.
"It's really a team effort," says Bettany, who responds to roughly 200 messages a day from the app's users and doubles as Agent Sophia in The Heist, a popular iPhone game created by tap tap tap's sister company, MacHeist. "We each put in as much effort as we can to earn our share."
Here are Bettany's three tips for other entrepreneurs looking to make it big in apps:
1. Be prepared to adjust your pricing. No matter how great your app may be, nobody's going to buy it if it's too expensive and gets buried in a sea of cheaper, more popular tools. The Camera+ app originally sold for $2.99, with the idea that iPhone users would pay more for a premium app. When sales failed to take off, the price tag was cut to 99 cents and the app shot up to No.2 in the iTunes ranking. Photo contests and buzz from tech blogs have helped, too.
2. Turn your fans into evangelists. Bettany uses her blog to offer tips and tricks on how to use Camera+ to create great photos and encourages fans to download the latest free upgrade. When iPhone users socialize their photos, it also builds buzz for Camera+.
3. Find developers who complement your skills. Bettany credits her app’s success to partnering with a talented and creative development team that spans the globe from Austria to New Zealand to San Francisco. Development sessions take place overnight on iChat and Skype, and everybody gets a say in how the app gets built. "We certainly have arguments [over which features to add]," she says, "but we're all passionate about creating great apps."

Now onto the WWE Title Match between John Cena and CM Punk.
It will be a well, hard-fought match with it being pretty even throughout the match.
CM Punk will kick out of Cena's Attitude Adjustment while Cena kicks out of Punk's GTS. The match will end with CM Punk getting a roll-up on Cena for the 1-2-3.
And as Vince declared, he's gonna walk up the ramp, and enter the ring.
But instead of firing John Cena, he states that Alberto Del Rio earned a Title Match on Raw, and that he was the No. 1 Contender at Money in the Bank.
So Vince will declare a match with CM Punk and Alberto Del Rio for the WWE Title, as Alberto did earn the rights to face the champ at Money in the Bank.
Obviously, Alberto Del Rio will win the match, thus making him WWE Champion.
This would make complete sense, as it's been advertised that John Cena will face Alberto at House Shows, Dark Matches, and rumors have even swirled that they'll be facing each other at Summerslam.
And remember, this isn't necessarily what should happen, although it would be pretty good in my opinion, but it is what I think will go down at the PPV.
